When we talk about teaching methods in sex education, we are referring to how we can develop an innovative methodology that deals with methods and strategies for making teaching more effective and meaningful
When we turn to this subject, the question arises almost immediately:
Is there really a specific teaching approach for dealing with it?
The reality is that it is not quite there yet. There are theoretical and practical references, as well as many proposals, but there has been little progress in terms of methodology.
That is why I would like to share six steps which, based on my own experience, can help you develop an innovative approach to sex education that is practical, context-specific and consistent with your particular setting.
Self-reflection before teaching sex education
1️⃣The first step involves looking inwards. Working on one’s own sex education means confronting one’s own prejudices, taboos and the ways in which we talk about sexuality. Because what we do not process tends to surface anyway: in our words, in our silences, in our educational choices. It is essential to pause and observe what ‘comes naturally to us’ and examine it with a reflective eye.
2️⃣In addition to this, we need to consider the ‘inner workings’ of the context in which we work. Whether it is a school, a counselling centre or a team, the institutional environment can be either a resource or a constraint. Understanding internal dynamics, recognising alliances and resistance, and assessing the potential for networking enables us to make more informed decisions.
3️⃣At the same time, there is an ‘outside’ factor: families. Often seen as an obstacle, they can in fact become a central part of the process. Involving them from the outset, keeping them informed of developments and creating opportunities for dialogue helps to build continuity and reduce tensions.
Methodological design and educational tools
4️⃣At this point, teaching sex education cannot be reduced to simply imparting information. It is not the same as teaching grammar or maths. We are talking about issues that touch on the body, emotions and personal experiences. That is why they require an approach capable of bringing about real change, not just imparting knowledge.
5️⃣Plan with flexibility: It is here that lesson planning takes on a central role. Not as a rigid framework, but as a process involving observation, setting objectives, selecting appropriate activities, managing time and assessment. This is essential when applying effective teaching methods in sex education.
6️⃣Finally, the playful dimension. Integrating play does not mean adding an activity, but creating a different environment. Play facilitates interaction, makes complex content accessible and creates spaces where difficult feelings can be expressed.
Does that mean the game solves everything? No. Does it remove all resistance? Not at all.
Because it is not a matter of applying ready-made solutions, but of developing a perspective. A way of engaging with educational situations, of interpreting what is happening, and of creating opportunities for change.
This is where an innovative approach to sex education is based.
If you’re interested in exploring this approach further and developing your own working method, I’m currently putting together a recorded course in which I cover these steps in greater detail.
Because it’s not about having ready-made answers, but about being able to develop them in practice.
